Taking Algebra I in 8th grade is one of the strongest predictors of long-term academic opportunity and economic mobility. Accelerated Math is designed to help more students build the skills and confidence they need to be successful in advanced math courses.

All rising 6th- and 7th-grade students will be enrolled in Accelerated Math courses for the 2026-2027 school year.

For current 7th-grade students preparing for 8th grade placement:

• Students who score Meets or Masters on the 7th grade STAAR math assessment will be enrolled in Algebra I for 8th grade.
• Students who score Approaches or Did Not Meet will be enrolled in 8th grade math.

Houston ISD is committed to making sure that rigorous learning comes with meaningful support.

District curriculum support

During the 2025–2026 school year, 5th- and 6th-grade students will be provided learning experiences after STAAR that help bridge into the Accelerated Math courses they will take the following year.

Pre-Teach supports

Alongside Accelerated Math, Houston ISD will launch Pre-Teach courses designed to provide:

• Just-in-time support and scaffolds aligned to upcoming grade-level learning
• Targeted support for students who need an additional boost
• Skill building that strengthens confidence and readiness while maintaining high expectations

Strategic Lesson Design and Pacing

Accelerated Math does not mean students are learning more content in less time. Instead, learning objectives that naturally connect across grade levels are taught together, allowing students to spend more time developing a deep understanding of key concepts. This approach supports strong understanding without accelerating the pace beyond what is developmentally appropriate.

Yes. 5th- and 6th-grade students attending summer school will engage in coursework that is aligned to the Accelerated Math curriculum. We are finalizing optional asynchronous learning opportunities for families who want additional practice and preparation but are not required to attend summer school.
